Color Separations

A color separation is the translation of visible light to ink, pigment, or dye reproductions. Visible light is made up of the Red, Green, and Blue primaries (RGB). These three combined produce white light. Obviously, if you combine red, green, and blue inks, you do not get white.

The light image must be translated into the secondary colors of Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow for reproduction. Black is usually added as a fourth color to enhance the reproduction.
