High Resolution Recorders
The two most popular high resolution recorders are the Kodak LVT and Cymbolics Fire 1000 series. These recorders differ from "conventional" recorders which photograph an internal CRT (Cathode Ray Tube). These high quality units write directly to the film.
They are capable of extremely high resolution, which in these devices is commonly refered to as "RES" (measured in pixels per mm). The Fire 1000 typically uses RES 50 (1270 dpi), where certain models of the LVT are capable of RES 120 (3048 dpi).
Because of their resolution and exact pixel reproduction, they are ideal for mural quality transparencies and negatives.
