Process camera

A process camera is a highly specialized camera designed for copying flat art. It uses a high resolution "flat field" lens which is optimized for photographing flat objects (where a conventional camera lens must have adequate depth of field to render 3-D objects properly).

All surfaces (copy board, lens plane, and film plane) are perfectly parallel to eliminate perspective distortion.

Lighting is evenly distributed to eliminate fall-off or darkening in the corners. The better cameras have a provision for photographing transparencies via backlighting.

Process cameras come in two varieties, horizontal and vertical. Both are calibrated to allow a pre focused image at enlargements set by the operator.

These cameras can be used for line shots (image with no gray tones), halftones, or color separations.
