The NC-500, which was recently introduced, utilizes a new printing technology that should provide output quality similar to today's dye sub printers at a per-print cost well below that of dye sub. It is not on a par or considered a replacement for the photographic output of the PG-3000.
The NC-500 utilizes a printing technology called Thermal Autochromer. In the paper are CMY layers of micro-encapsulated dyes. The beads are burst with a thermal head, and the remaining un-burst (is that a word?) beads are fixed with ultraviolet light. The three layers all burst at different temperatures, and the thermal head makes three passes.
The only consumable is the paper.
