Digitizing Images
In order to do computer manipulation and output, an image must be in digital form. If the image already exists as a print or transparency, it must be converted. This process is called digitizing.

Digital Cameras produce digital data. The quality to price ratio improves everyday. High quality cameras with large format backs (necessary for good quality) are in the $40,000 area.

Scanning is the process of digitizing a print or transparency. High end drum scanners provide the highest quality, but consumer desktop units provide exceptional results.

Kodak PhotoCD® provides an inexpensive way of scanning and storing images. For around $1.50 each, scans can be made from color negs, transparencies, and black & white negs at time of processing or later, from existing film.
